Tips For Personal Goal Setting
Goal setting is an integral part of self-esteem build up and success. You have to set baby step goals when you are starting out, and reward yourself for each one reached to build your self confidence. From there you can set the bar higher and stretch farther to reach your goals, and each successive achievement will lay the groundwork for the next one.
One Step at a Time
People often make the mistake of creating too many goals that are all positive and individually attainable. Unfortunately, they don’t consider that they aren’t superhumans. When they ultimately fail, they blame themselves for not being good enough — not realizing the Justice League themselves probably could not have pulled off what they demanded of themselves.
Out come the recriminations. “Stupid, incapable, helpless, worthless, dumb.” Stop already! You made a mistake. Take a deep breath and start over with a more sensible set of goals — or maybe just one, to start. For the typical person, it is much more productive to focus on accomplishing one or two things at a time. Put your goals in a productive order and concentrate on them one at a time.
Use Linear Logic
Set your goals in an order so each completed task set the stage for the next mile marker. You want goal C to have built upon goal B which had built upon goal A. Primary goals must take care of the individual first. If you do not give your mind, body and spirit everything they need first, then they can not give you back what you need to reach the rest of your goals. Create a stronger you through positive self talk and reinforcement of a good self image, and other goals that need extra energy and time investment will follow more smoothly.
Create Support
Having a system to support and encourage you in place makes each and every goal more reachable. Finding a network of people, whether family, friends or an online community, who can act both as a sounding board and a source of encouragement. This will lessen the likelihood of feeling discouraged and letting your dreams fall by the wayside. One thing to remember in this step is to diminish the amount of negativity in your life. If someone is constantly telling you that you can’t do something, tell them you can’t spend your energy on them anymore.
Just Do It
Talking about succeeding is great, but it must be followed by action. The things you say to yourself need to be ‘doing’ focused, not ‘feel good’ focused. Decide on a goal, break it down, make a plan, then start building yourself up to complete it. Don’t forget to choose something special to motivate you and serve as your reward at the end of the line!
Don’t talk down to yourself, and don’t let anyone else do it either. If someone tells you ‘It just can’t be done’, ignore them. Perhaps they haven’t got what it takes, but that doesn’t mean you don’t. Make sure you are positive the goal can be achieved, and then be like the ‘Little Engine that could’ and tell yourself “I think I can!”
Being able to accomplish many things is often simply a matter of “just doing it.” With normal intelligence and a moderate amount of fortitude you can reach any reasonable goal. Develop your plan, write it down, and talk yourself through it. Often some proactive goal setting combined with some positive affirmation will be all you need to get you over the hump and sailing down the road to the finish line!
